and you've got the original version of the song (with vocals), couldn't you theoretically isolate the vocals by getting something to compare the difference between the two tracks?

Track 1 = Music and no vocals
Track 2 = Music with vocals

If they're otherwise identical then surely that's possible? So you're left with a track containing the vocals on their own.
