Could somebody explain the sad demise of the long sleeve t-shirt as band merch mainstay?

I remember when you were NOBODY if you didn't have a Ned's Kill Your Television long sleeve. Well, you were someone, but certainly not someone with said long sleeve and thus, nobody.
