DiS' Song of the Day #6 - THE SUNDAYS 'Can't Be Sure'
Decided to theme this week around female artists with voices that make me shiver (and next week will be all about my tips for 2010).
'Can't Be Sure' by The Sundays
I was just reading this fantastic piece http://popdose.com/flashback-90-the-sundays-reading-writing-and-arithmetic about how The Sundays 'Reading, Writing and Arithmetic' was released 20 years ago on Rough Trade!? I've fallen in love with and to this album several times over. I think my Cure/Bunnymen-loving Mum must have really loved 'Here's Where the Story Ends' or maybe it was on a compilation or movie soundtrack I had when I was 8 years old but that song, which was a bit of a hit at the time, is one of my earliest recollections of listening to a song repeatedly. Mostly the obsession was because of Harriet Wheeler's vocal which combines with sparse yet hazy sunshine melodies and it wasn't really like anything I was accustomed to. They were much more adroit than, say, Cocteau Twins and probably not as DiS-friendly because of it but as far as lost classics go, this album takes some beating.
