DiS' Song of the Day #3: BEACH HOUSE 'Norway'
'Norway' by Beach House
The downward-spiralling loop goes huh-hur-huh like you've just shovelled scolding hot beans and jacket potato, whilst echoing like you're pot-holing beneath a church. Yet, it's ridiculously uplifting, perhaps because the soaring string-sounds bend in some kinda twilight whilst the organ (?) bass line twirls. Alex's near whisper glides from his mouth, talking about "the beast... billions of stars...", his volume only rising for the swirling his aay-'ey's (of Norway / No Way).
I'm not sure if it's Karen O's Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack's fault but this song feels sort of childish but only in the way kids find it fun to shout down sewer tubes and bang on cake tins.
This song has done something to me that none of their releases before have done, least not like people told me they shoulda. In fact, I've been bored by Beach House whenever I've seen them live - which is a few times but only because they seem to be musician's favourite band and end up opening for Cat Power, Grizzly Bear, etc... Anyway, this is great and I've just put a pair of headphones on and I think I have some delicious humble pie to munch whilst discovering their back catalogue over the coming weeks and months.
Teen Dream is released via Bella Union on Jan 26th.
