Artrocker show - Castrovalva, Blacklisters, Buffalo @ The Gaff - London - 17/01
They people at Artrocker/NHS say:
The passage of time, the force feeding of mince pies and some relatively inexpensive reconstructive surgery to our eardrums and lo, we are recovered from the wondernight of KONG and FRAFF just before Chrimbo! What a way to welcome the festive season eh? If you were there you'll know what we mean...
So we're back, sat in our chairs with the words HEAVY ROCK MUSIC embrodered the back, and ready for 2010. Did you know that the soon-come Chinese New Year marks the coming of the Year of the Rock. No, nor us. Perhaps it was a figment of our sherry-addled imaginations.
No matter. What's certain is that we'll be bringing you the best new sounds this decade. Heavy sounds that is, as if there's any other kind.
First out of the blocks are this gang of three ...

Here's what we reckon...
CASTROVALVA (Leeds)
There's no telling what they put in the water in Leeds these days but it is mutating a scene into a beast of scary proportions .... and volume. Originally a guitar/drums 2piece, Castrovalva have introduced the weirdo vocal treatments of one Leemuth Smith (think of The Buttholes Gabby) and are now retelling tales of abrasive life. Current release 'Thuglife' is both surreal psyche and hyper-real rock action from the rock/street face. No telling what they will make of North London!
BLACKLISTERS (Leeds)
From the hugely fertile noise scene that breeds underground in the sewers of Leeds, this new four-piece have decided that Melvins and Jesus Lizard reading from the Birthday Party songbook could be a good way to get a message across - and a powerful message it is too. The current single 'Swords' is a bass grooving abrasion of screaming vocal and slicing-wire guitar action.
BUFFALO (London)
Brand new New Cross outfit comprising the optimum power-duo lineup of drums and guitar. Huge Sabbath-sized riffs though alongside assorted synth loops and anguished vocals make Buffalo a welcome and sizable addition to New heavy Sounds. Rock, grunge, noise and attitude in impressive quantities.
And for those who like to know what's in the record bags of our fine platter spinners, here's something like a playlist for ya...
