"the independent fringe has drifted ever further from mainstream tastes" - New York Times
Interesting piece http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/arts/music/03indie.html
I certainly agree that it's becoming harder and harder for bands to crossover from 'our world' into the kind of media that results in meaningful record/ticket sales i.e. enough to make a decent living from music, rather than relying on syncs or doing everything on a small budget... the knock on effect of which is the smaller the successes of the successful acts, the less the brave, independent labels can compete with the majors and the less failures they can afford, all of which is eating away at independent culture's ability to survive and/or innovate. I fear a future full of rich kids being the only ones who are able to afford to be involved with, release and/or make music. It's much scarier in the grand scheme of things than people realise - just like supermarkets and amazon were devastating for the independent record stores of old, a lot of which were the lifeblood to a towns scene...
Is blogging killing music? And is the churnover of bands on blogs more damaging than anything else? I mean, how often do you see a blog write repeatedly about things, rather than constantly unearthing more new, new, newness? Or are blogs so small it doesn't really matter? I've had links to DiS on blogs get only 20 or so clickthroughs, makes you wonder how small a lot of these blogs really are versus the "everyone knows about this band" mentality...
