Steffen Basho-Junghans in London
I remember the dude came up in the guitarists like Fahey thread a while ago and thought there might be some interest from people. Basically an amazing 6 and 12 string guitarist not as old as Fahey and Basho but basically from the era before the Chasneys, Blackshaw's and Roses of these modern times. Alos just coming back on an indeterminabley long tube ride from heathrow I read the article in the Wire about Peter Walker, his Rainy Day Raga sounds great need to check it out.
So anyway blurb from the promoter (its at Cafe Oto on the 5th Nov):
One of the original 6 and 12 Steel string guitar masters Steffen Basho-Junghans is often compared to contemporary guitarists such as Jack Rose, Glenn Jones and Sir Richard Bishop, he manages to create a concentration and intensity at his live performances that is unique to his own special way of playing.
Existing between "Folk-Western-Raga" & "Minimal-Trance-Folk" - The real 12 string and open tuning master fascinates with unorthodox styles and sound-ideas, combining north American steel string traditions, European classic, American Indian, oriental, northern and far eastern influences and textures, celebrating archaic sounds of the steel string 6 & 12, sometimes nearly hypnotic and orchestral, to express a wide range of emotions and colours. Playing techniques of Indian stringed instruments like Vina and Sarod were blended on Guitar with American Indian and Oriental scales and rhythms into atmospheric paintings. In his newer works he often uses uncommon playing techniques to develop new possibilities for his compositions.
“I’ve done several shows with SBJ, and can say, without exaggeration, that he is a magician. He connects with his audience and is a dramatic and deep player, and he manages to include his experimental side in his sets in ways that are organic and absorbing…” Glenn Jones
