More influential than any music mag, tv show or radio show?
Are celebrity twitters as influential as I'm starting to believe? https://twitter.com/parishilton/status/4598241632
I mean, I doubt it is THE FOOOOCHA but surely the media's influence is dwindling and it's only a matter of time until labels start paying celebs for endorsements rather than spending money on advertising and PR campaigns? I mean, in theory Paris Hilton reaches 600k people and NME sells to between 60k-35k people a week (the latter is about how many followers they have on Twitter too https://twitter.com/nmemagazine ).
It's not as if this is something new. Like, I doubt Pixies would be as big without Kurt's fanboying them and I suspect there are a heap of acts who wouldn't have got record deals at one time or another if they weren't friends with the flavour of the moment (hello Little Man Tate!)
What do people think about this? It's sad, isn't it? Or is it just the way things work nowadays and we should accept it? Are there any slebs you've got tipped off by? I remember feeling weird when Stephen Fry tweeted about listening to Explosions in the Sky, wondering how many people might check them out and fall in love with them. It was nice to hear Little Boots enthuse about Metronony amongst her tweets about going to gym, being jetlagged, etc and I suspect some of her fans might like them.
Oddly, all of this has got me thinking about how incredibly self-interested/self-obsessed lotsa people are and how few of the 'power users' I follow on Twitter actually post about things that are worthwhile or help acts they like on their way up or who aren't the medias flavour of the moment.
