When will it end? Just listened to new Atlas Sound album and had to turn it off, despite my love for most things Deerhunter related. In fact, I've been hating on all these kindsa bands for a while, despite, deep down, knowing that I'm probably wrong (well, only if dis music forum popular opinion is 'right').
For me, the biggest problem is that acts like these are seen as being 'cool' because of an aesthetic, rather than talent. Like punk, electro, etc. It's all very scene, trying to be one step away from the hipsters and ginsters sponsored gigs.
What I can't figure out if this is an aesthetic born out of necessity due to poor budgets = home recording, small bands being cheap to tour or a reaction to the over-produced sheen and laptop electronics, as well as the commodified music now deemed as 'alternative', that welcomes and panders to the audience. What I can't get my head around, is how it's deemed inventive and why there are so many bands like it getting coverage - my guess is that it's the kinda niche genre that has a niche media and vocal online fanbase i.e. the kinda music that appeals to people on these boards, causing a movement/scene to appear or at least to be patchworked together by promoters, labels, etc with a punk spirit.
I realise this is a faux pas post but maybe I'm not as alone as I think. I just wish I liked the music but so much of it seems to intentionally lack any ambition beyond making a discordant quilt of noise and it's what driving me to increasingly loving Lady Gaga and embracing Paramore.
