Genre Exercises.
Listening to that new Yo La Tengo track, I was compelled to think about how much I love it when an artist twists a well known genre into their own distinct aesthetic. Yo La Tengo's new tune perfectly uses 60's soul tropes (and we're talking more Issac Hayes than Marvin Gaye) to spice up their low key brilliance and lyrics as emotionally honest as any in their career. Other recent genre exercises I've loved have been Sunn O)))'s mammoth sludgification of black metal on Black One, and Zomby's high octane dubstep re-imagining of hardcore house on Where Were U In 92?
Now that I've taken two good ones, I leave the rest up to you.
But this is DiS, so don't forget to slag off horrible genre exercises that totally missed the mark.
