For me:
The Former-Scott Walker. The man not only has one of the most powerful sets of pipes I've ever heard, but he sounds like a man barely clinging to sanity, throwing his entire consciousness into inhabiting his evocative, strange poetry, or that of writers he was influenced by (Brel being the most notable of course).

The Latter-John Darnielle. Hearing his reedy whine causes me to experience intense anger and uncontrollable twitching. His recording moniker is one of the most appropriate in indie rock.
