International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia
I know this is a music website but there's a few of you still use "gay" in the derogatory sense. That ain't good, people.
Today is IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Using gay as in "wrong" is not only insulting to those who are gay, but it also can have a detrimental effect on those going through the painful process of coming out - if you're from Glasgow like me, I can assure you it can be very, very hard.
For those of you who I think I'm just being too PC for my own good, I work for an LGBT rights organisation. I've seen folk come into my work cracking up because they've been taught all their lives being gay is wrong or been beaten up for being homosexual, and using 'gay' as 'wrong' can only support this. And if you still think I'm just a woolly liberal, instead of saying "gay" as an insult, replace the word gay with black or female and you'll see the impact.
I love DiS almost as much as I love music but I'm really, really fucked off with coming on here seeing wee boys using the word "gay" as wrong. Have a look at the recent "atlas sound" thread and you'll get my drift.
In Moscow right now, the Mayor has tried to dissuade gay men coming to Moscow for the Eurovision Song contest, calling them perverse and satanic, and has banned Pride. As much as I hate Eurovision, gay men are going to be beaten up and arrested tonight for who they are, yet according to some folk on this website they are "wrong" or "bad".
The word "gay" is not a baton.
Now did anyone see Melt banana last night in brum - fucking rockin...
