Album Review: To The Bones 'Duke Type A'
Who the hell are To The Bones? To The Bones are saving hard rock single handedly. In a world where metal is a very dirty word indeed - and rightly so - these depraved muvvers are out to set the record straight and take some numbers while they're at it.
See, not since Motorhead released 'Ace of Spades' or Nirvana brought the hard-edged ruckus to yer ears have a band so wilfully shredded their throats and fingers for your entertainment. But we ain't talkin' about blistering onanistic solos and back Whitesnake haircuts... these punks are Rawk dragged through a hedge backwards, still drunk on cheap ale and hoarse on fags.
This is the sound of your ears bleeding and your foot still tappin' and twitchin' in time... ladies and gents, 'Duke Type A' is kicking a wall down and will have you beggin' for mercy.
For the opening floorboard splinterin' hellraised racket of 'Judith' this LP means business. Shady, underhanded business. It spits "ps-ps-ps-ps-psycho!" before kicking you in the groin and hollerin' "one, two, one, two, fuck you!" before descending into hellish white-noise primal howlings. It's too fuckin' good. This is 100mph music to make you feel hard-as-nails.
No fluke either. Singles 'Rex' and 'Sharkie's Bone Symphony' are two of the most exciting rock rekkids I've heard in eons. Serious. The former is part punk, part Pixies, part garage, part something completely their own... 'Sharkie's...' is a monster of a record, a wailin' assault, Lemmy style sermonisin', finger pointin' and maximum rhythm and booze.
It's so hard to pin these fuckers down, man. They've thrown everything at this LP... kitchen sink fulla pots and all. 'Sonic Mammoth' shows this is a band not afraid of pop-leanings (only in a 'There's Definitely Some Tuneful Singin' In There) with the band taking that relentless fuzz of the Velvet Underground and splicing it with The Strokes... if The Strokes had a pair of nuts between 'em. 'Ginza Blackjack' sounds like an amped up My Bloody Valentine. Yeah buddy, you read that right. LP closer, 'To The Fucking Bones' will leave your hair, frazzled, stood on end. At the close of such abuse... such good time rock 'n' roll, you'll be breathless.
Shoegaze at 11, ferocious punk-ass rock 'n' roll, throat ravagin' rawk and everything else. This is a phenomenal debut that has had just about everybody fumblin' in their trousers with excitement. It's more than justified too. I mean, these oiks have come and stared everyone close in the eyeball and thrown down the gauntlet. It's hip, loose, heavy and hard... and destined for continual rotation. Shit, these guys are even better live too. This is extreme sonic terror. You need it in your life... if you've got the nerve.
