What's the deal with Sam Cooke?
I finally bought a Sam Cooke CD the other day, and had very high expectations, as a lot of people off here have been very eager to recommend Cooke. The CD was a compilation called The Best Of Sam Cooke, and the tracklisting was as follows:
-You Send me
-Only Sixteen
-Everybody Loves To Cha Cha Cha
-For Sentimental Reasons
-What A Wonderful World
-Summertime
-Chain Gang
-Cupid
-Twistin' The Night Away
-Sad Mood
-Having A Party
-Bring It On Home To Me
-Win Your Love For Me
-You Were Made For Me
-Nothing Can Change This Love
Now, by all means, there are some good tunes and it is inarguable that his voice is very pleasant to listen to. His version of Summertime, for example, beats Nina Simone's version for even if it isn't quite up there with Billie Holiday's. Twistin' is catchy, Chain Gang is good but I've heard other versions with more.... bite. Most of this album I found simply to be, dare I say it, a bit boring.
Have I just picked the wrong CD? Where am I going wrong? Is there something I'm missing out on, or is he simply not for me?
