The Pipettes last night at Manchester Academy
I just have to gush. I really do.
The Pipettes were awesome. They have a backing band called the cassettes who all wear matching richie cunningham style sleeveless red jumpers with their initials sewn into them. They came out first and I heard someone in front of me say 'aw, they're not girls'. But then they appeared and strode out front glammed up like girls going zonk! should be. Matching blue on black polka dot dresses. They practically shone the moment they appeared. There were girls down the front screaming. It was like a proper pop concert with proper pop stars.
They’re just so good to watch, most bands don’t really do anything do they? They’ve got choreographed dance routines, theatrical flourishes, they mime things to do with the lyrics, swap stage positions and lead vocals. It's so refreshing to see someone doing something that's poppy and clever with a bit of style and actually putting on a show. Plus they gained massive kudos for having a line in one song quoting from Laura Palmer's Dr Jacobi tapes in Twin Peaks - the bit where she says about James Hurley and how 'I can only take so much of sweet' and spits the word sweet - right down to the delivery it was the same.
I've decided that 'we are the pipettes' is actually the greatest song ever written. I first saw them at the joogleberry theatre in brighton two years ago and I remembered it and it was so catchy that even though I didn't hear it again for another year I could still remember it and it still popped into my head occasionally of its own free will. Having the balls to get up in front of a room full of people and sing 'if you haven't noticed yet/we're the prettiest girls you've ever met' is just... oh i can't even explain why it's so satisfying. It's complete punk.
They should be on top of the pops every week. In fact they should replace top of the pops with 'The Pipettes Show' where they can have adventures and solve mysteries and things. It could be like Scooby Doo but with more musical interludes.
