Mellon Collie
Finally got it (£4 inc postage on ebay!), and gave it some quality listening time last night. At the moment it seems to me like Disc 1 has some stunners (how fecking great is Zero!), some good stuff and some filler (erm, Cupid de Locke anyone?!).
Disc 2 is just awesome though, not a weak link and some absolutely beautiful stuff. 1979 was already one of my favourite songs ever but Thirty Three, Beautiful and By Starlight among others are all gorgeous, and the heavy stuff is great too (Bodies, XYU etc).
Seems to me like this is a much more extreme album than Siamese Dream - it contains both their most violent work and their prettiest. Corgan's lyrics are sometimes a bit angst-by-numbers but he more than makes up for it with possibly the greatest lyric ever written (1979). His voice veers from insanely whiny to lovely but somehow it's all part of the charm of the album. It feels very much like a late-teenage album and maybe that's part of why I love it.
Anyway, great stuff and I prefer it to Siamese Dream already.
