First gig you ever played
I'm guessing that about 90% of people on DiS are or were in bands or have played live in front of people in some way.
So here we go, tell us about the first gig you played. What was the band called? Where/when was it? What did you do in the band? How did it go?
For me I was the lead guitarist in Screen Test. Our first (and last) gig was at Dobbies Sports and Social Club on 5/12/99. All the band members apart from me were in the local scouts and it was their christmas disco. We played two 8 song sets mixing covers of Madonna, Eagle Eye Cherry, Iggy Pop, Offspring, Lou Reed, Robbie Williams amongst others in with some songs i'd written which were supposed to be like Pavement.
There's a video of this gig and I watched it the other day. We were excruciating. Our drummer only knew one beat and couldn't keep it in time. Our singer chose to take the stage wearing one Thinsulate glove as some kind of statement. Our other guitarist's guitar wouldn't stay in tune for a whole song. The bassist looked like he was going to go sunbathing in Blackpool and I chose to wear a salmon-coloured T-shirt and white combat trousers whilst inflicting my deliberately off key guitarwank on a room full of small children and old grannies waiting for the free pastie and peas.
Then to cap it all off we played a 'hilarious' comedy punk version of 'My Girl' which segued into a comedy reggae version, which segued into a comedy rap version. Needless to say this got a better reaction than my 'thoughtful' 'angular' alt.rock efforts.
Ho hum... we live and learn.
