The Departure
Just saw these guys play the Oxegen festival. I can't remember another band that appeared as studied, manufactured, contrived and so ruthlessly designed and calculated to appeal to the hearts and minds of indie fans worldwide. They reference all the right bands - The Smiths and Radiohead (attention to lyrics), Gang Of Four (riffs and grooves), Suede (vocal delivery) and any number of 80's bands that all of a sudden it's fashionable to like nowadays. Everything about them feels derivative and selfconscious - not an original idea between the 5 of them. As for their appearance, my girlfriend said it best - "They're a boy band in all but name! There's the geeky one (lead guitarist), the cute one (vocalist), the cool one (bassist), the tough one (guitarist) and the normal one (drummer)." How guys like this can get Parlophone's attention is beyond me....
