Built To Spill - Live
If I was a little more interesting I could be a neurotic out of a Seinfeld episode. Should I write a mini-review? Why do I feel the need to relate every musical tidbit I come across? How come I can't just write funny Fullerov one-liners? I resolve these serious questions by saying, "fuck it".
Some bands surprise by me. I hadn't noticed, for example, that Trail of Dead were really a band built around the drum kit before I saw them. BTS, kids, is all about the magic of the electric guitar. The band has three of them. Two of the guitarists are truly superb. Doug Martsch is something else all together. Never in my life have I seen a display like that. Martsch weilded the axe as though it were a body part.
God really must have a sense of humor. DM hardly fits the rock 'n roll stereotype. He looks like an emaciated lumberjack that has the voice and gestures of a five year old. Except when he's playing that extra body part. Amazing. Just fucking amazing.
BTS will never be rock stars. Rock stars provide the complete package. Bowie has his theatricality. The Stones have swagger. BTS simply don't have that sort of stage presence. For them it's all about the music. And if changing a broken guitar string and re-tuning the guitars between songs bores the crowd, too fucking bad. Because it's about the music. And if that's enough for you, then you're in for a treat when they make their way to your hometown.
