Middlesbrough Festival Report
I went to the Middlesbrough Festival today. JESUS, it was full of young early teen Scenesters. They were everywhere, did my head in a couple of times. Anyway, it was a glorious day at first, the sun was blazing, but they it poured down. I didn’t get to see as many bands as I hoped for. Here’s a run down of what I saw:
Envelopes
Cheers Brainlove, the penny dropped when I saw these guys live. All thoses early doubts I had were suddenly gone. It was packed out for the previous band ‘Darts’, but they all vanished for Envelopes. I guess no one has heard about them yet (their loss) so only about 40 people were left. First song was totally screwed up and all over the place, so I was getting a little worried. But after that they tore through their set and I just couldn’t keep my feet from moving. I just seemed to be grinning through the entire set. Please, I hope this bands makes it… if you get the chance see these guys live… great fun. One complaint was the sound guys wouldn’t turn the microphones up and the vocal was too quiet.
Kubb
Hmmm, I’m not to sure about these guys. Went to see them because my mate is a fan and fair is fair, he was coming to see bands I like. Anyway, there is no doubting the guy has a great voice. But it all sounded a little to Simple Minds/U2/Colplay to me. Not really my cup of tea but they seemed like good musicians.
Rollin Stoned
They were Rolling Stones tribute band. This was just some good old fun. They were on the big stage and we were too tired to walk round. I’m a big stones fan, so it was good to watch these for a short while. They had me singing along and laughing at his high kicks haha.
We Are Scientists
Hmmm, was a bit pissed off with these guys. I was looking forward to this gig, I’d only heard 1 track but quite liked it. Anyway, they turned up 30mins late. I was right at the front, but I was surrounded by screaming Scenesters Gaaaah! The screamed thoughout the gig, the sound of the band was atrocious anyway (those sound guys want fucking shooting) and this just made it worse. The band seemed to ‘look like they were good’ but I couldn’t possible pass any form of a proper opinion.
Anyway, poor show really. The Envelopes were the highlight of the day. They really are brilliant. I’ve placed a photo of them from the gig on my profile if anyone is interested? The rain fucked the rest of the day. All the indoor venues were full and the outdoor ones were shit! (The Thrills Pffffft)
Anyone else go? Which bands did you see?
