**YOUR top 10 or 20 PUNK bands of all time**
>>>after all that writing from the other thread, i thought id reward myself with a thread of it's own, so insert copy and pasted..<<<
I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of this genre in question. Vintage punk is totally where it's at - and im sure Mike of the Lock-Up would agree!
.) BLACK FLAG - the most powerful punk band ever (why not see my cool Black Flag DiS artist profile!! add them some stars - im the only one thats voted!)
.) RAMONES - the founding forefathers of punk without a question. (OK Iggy too) The uniformity, simplicity and general greatness of this band will frever be remembered. OK TopShop and Virigin sell ramones tees for like a tenner or something - but the kids that discover and pass on the ramones punk torch are the ones that benefit here as does punk rock in general. DiS profile on the way, why haven't they got one yet??? criminal.
.) Circle Jerks - Group Sex is the best punk album ever - 25mins of MADNESS -14 tracks no-longer than 2 mins (again, see my DiS Circle Jerks profile for more in-depth info....)
.) Dead Kennedys - Jello is not only a punk legend, but an institution also. Live at the Deaf Club is the 2nd best Live punk album to the Black Flag live in '84.
.) Misfits - the Danzig era: amazing. The man is a genius with words, catchy punk songs with oodles of balls and aggression.
.) The Damned - Artpunk experts of shock and awe. The Smash it up anthology is a must for everyone who digs the genre.
.) Husker-Du - Perhaps the most criminally under-rated pop-punk band ever.
.) Minor Threat - dangerously fast and always spot-on. Ian Mckaye (friend of H. Rollins) is a thorough dsciplinarian of his bands music. Never have Minor Threat or Fugazi made a tune that isn't just totally right!
.) MIA / Germs - two different bands 50% of the same personnel. Fast, political, rude and like BF refused by their record comp to release their debut album for fear it was an 'anti-parent/establishment' record. (see: MIA complete discography)
.) CRASS - UK political punk, yes i know, but CRAS where even more political than most. You couldn't even give CRASS a deal cos they wouldn't take it, you could book them for gigs - but your venue would be fucked afterwards (see: Banned from the Roxy)
.) Clash - The real musicians of punk. Their sound over their career ranged from punk, soul, reggae, r n b, basically anything that the kids where into around the time, but not in a bandwagon-jumping kind of way. (see: ALL Clash albums - so bored of the USA esp!)
.) Blondie - Sure, Debby Harry is about 90 and Blondie got pretty lame, but those early Blondie records were classic power pop and I can still listen to them over and over. "X Offender" has classic lyrics and a great tune, while "Presence" is just a gorgeous power pop tune.
.) Sex Pistols - What can I say? The Ramones may have started it all, but the Sex Pistols rubbed everybody's face in it. Coming out with "God Save The Queen" on the week of the celebration of the Queen's 25th anniversary on the throne was a masterpiece of timing. The A and B side of both these singles are all great, and the flips are not on Bollocks, although they probably are on any of half a dozen other reissues by now.
.) The Weirdos - by name and nature. Weirdos were hard edged and deadly when they did this...much different from their later lps where the had mutated into some kind of funny punk joke band. This one has fat, fat, fat powerhouse guitar and tough singing plus two full on tunes to boot. Awesome.
.) UK Subs - Persistence is the main attribute of the UK Subs. Possibly one of the HARDEST WORKING punk bands!! yes, possibly even doing the Flag out of hardcore punkrock work. The band have been giging almost evryday since 1979 - yes (almost) everyday. Charlie Harper has a good hoarse shout which amtures with age. (see: Strangehold)
.) The Vibrators - I only have two LPs of the Vibrators, both of which are almost completely in-audible. They didn't know how to record a good punk tune but my uncle tells me the Vibrators show he saw when he was a teen was one of the best things he's ever witnessed - at first i was confused cos i know he's seen all the greats (ramones, flag etc) but there has to be some truth in there somewhere.
.) The Jam - Took punk from torn shoes and smack to suits and champagne and where able to change their sound like haircuts whilst keeping the maxium oomph!
.) Descendents - pop-punk back then was credible, it isn't now! These guys made some of the poppunk singles ever - Im Not A Loser: a loser in one persons eyes cos they dont wear polo sport, whcih inturn makes them non-losers: I am a loser = not a loser. *mind boggles (def see: Im not a Loser)
.) D.O.A - check this band if you haven't already - chick biscuit is the best punk drummer of all time, granted his best work is probably with the Jerks before he joined his brother and cousin in DOA.
.) The Buzzcocks - musically gifted punksters that were actually ABLE to harmonise effectively. Whats their best tune? I say Orgasm Addict others say Ever Fallen in Love with....or What Do I Get. the choice is yours, you decide.
I FUCKING love PUNK ROCK
DiScuss.......
