The Worst Year in Rock
Things were looking pretty bleak for me after the grunge scene died out. I'm not even sure how the word came about as there wasn't anything particularly revolutionary about it, unless greasy hair and flannel shirts counted (yes, of course, Nevermind is great). But KROQ fm Blink 182/Green Day stuff nearly sent me looking for a new hobby in the late 90s. The 80s are frequently slagged but I don't see the justification there. The best of the 80s is directly responsible for the best we have today (MBV, JD, EATB et al).
1978. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but I picked this because it was the tail end of the 'classic' era in which most everyone seemed to run out of ideas. Foreigner, Toto, Boston, Styx. Some of the worst guitar/drum solos of all time. Also, because it was between Bowie Berlin records. Between the unachievable greatness of db and the god-awful trash that littered the radio, it's no wonder I didn't pick up a guitar for another 10 years.
Your turn. What year was thoroughly forgettable?
