classical
What classical music do dis-ers enjoy? I'm picky, but some classical is among my favourite music. Henry Gorecki's probably my favourite composer. From the drones and haunting melodies of his Symphonies (especially number 3- the second movement of which is one of the most stunning pieces of music ever written) to the spiky, angsty chamber pieces- it's all incredible. A huge influence on the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mt.Zion too, methinks.
Gavin Bryars' Sinking Of The Titanic is another stunning piece of work. Though it's incredibly simple it demands your full attention and it's impossible to put across its power and beauty in words.
Allegri's Misiere should be owned by everyone in the world, too. It's a choral piece for 64 voices and the exclusive "rights" to it were owned by the singers of the Sistine Chapel (they were the only ones with the sheet music for it) until 1770 when Mozart heard it, memorized it and wrote the whole bloody thing down himself.
Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is awesome too. Not just the bit that everyone knows (not even appearing on All Spice ads can detract from its power) but the whole thing. Dark, brooding and bloody brilliant. The lyrics (12th century poetry by monks) are awesome too- dealing with filthy lurid sex and the depths of depression (some of the lyrics would make Ian Curtis proud).
Just about anything written by Beethoven, Bach or Phillip Glass is worth checking out, too.
