Recon Festival Leeds: Blixa Bargeld, Stephen O'Malley, Nick Cave film, Owls, Slum Village (18th-29th SEPT)
Leeds and Bradford’s festival of pioneering, experimental and underground music, film and art makes its return in September this year. Building on the successes of last year’s debut - that attracted praise from The Wire and The Guardian - the festival’s organisers are looking to make this edition an even more exciting prospect with performances and new commissions from avant-garde guitarist Stephen O’Malley of Seattle drone metallers Sunn O))), Leeds’ Ashtray Navigations who celebrate their 20th anniversary, Einstürzende Neubauten and Nick Cave collaborator Blixa Bargeld, legendary anarcho-punks Zounds, Detroit hip hop group Slum Village, plus David Thomas Broughton, That Fucking Tank, Owls, Tom Hopkins & Giulia Ricci and much more.
The festival will take place over a number of venues in both cities including Howard Assembly Room, Brudenell Social Club, Delius Arts and Cultural Centre, Wharf Chambers Co-operative Club, Hyde Park Picture House, The 1 in 12 Club and Victoria Gardens outside Leeds Art Gallery.
Confirmed commissions exclusive to RECON include The Amorphous Orchestra's Frozen Music, an art and science collaboration using brain activity sensors to visualize the emotional states of performing musicians that will take place outside Leeds Art Gallery with support from a grant from Leeds Inspired. A grant from Arts Council England has also been awarded to support the development of new works unique to RECON 2014 including the partnering of Sheffield thirty-piece ‘anti-choir’ Juxtavoices and Bradford Scratch Orchestra.
