Sat Apr 20 - How Does It Feel To Be Loved?'s 11th birthday party and Dexys special at The Phoenix
Happy birthday to us! Happy birthday to us! Yes, we're overjoyed and faintly astonished to announce that this Saturday will be our ELEVENTH birthday party! Woo-hoo! Not long now til we're a moody teenager, but before then there's still time to bounce around excitedly to indiepop, northern soul, 60s girl groups and the like at The Phoenix in central London. Hurrah!
To mark the occasion, we have a ton of stuff happening on Saturday night. First off, it's a Dexys special. As Kevin Rowland and team will be playing the fifth day of their nine date residency at the Duke Of York theatre in the West End on Saturday, we've decided to hold a special night to celebrate one of our favourite bands. We'll be playing songs from all four Dexys albums throughout the night, plus songs the band have covered and songs that have inspired them over the years. Guest DJ David Christian of Comet Gain is a huge Dexys fan, so he'll be pitching in with some classics too.
This night is also our annual T-Shirt Weather Special. If such a thing lurks in your wardrobe, please come along in your favourite band or music related t-shirt. A pound off entry if it's a Dexys t-shirt!
Plus - to celebrate the fact that Saturday is Record Store Day, you can get a pound off admission if you show a receipt proving that you bought a record on Saturday. There's tons of cool instores and the like happening on the 20th, so why not go record shopping for the day and then come to us for a dance afterwards? Sounds like a plan!
Indie song of the week: "Old Man Don't Waste Your Time" by Darren Hayman And The Long Parliament. Darren takes a break from crafting sublime alt-folk to knock out a Hefner-tastic indie dancefloor smash! Yay! Talking of Hefner, you can probably expect a certain other song as well...
Soul song of the week: "Bar-B-Q" by Wendy Rene. To mark the long overdue arrival of spring - and surely it must be here now, please! - a sun-dappled feelgood northern classic.
Advance tickets for Saturday are here - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/215587 - Otherwise, it's the usual price of £4 on the door for members and £6 for non-members.
