Baltimore’s Arbouretum have released a score of acclaimed albums on the Thrill Jockey label, a home that finds them in the company of tourmates & worthy peers like Pontiak, Eternal Tapesty, Wooden Shjips & Barn Owl. They are deft interpreters of a monumental, volcanic sound, a heavy force which is earthen but simultaneously bound for the cosmos. This ritualistic psych rock emanates from Corey Allender’s churning, hypnotic bass, Matthew Pierce’s raga-drone synth sweeps & the ceremonially heavy drumming of J.V. Brian Carey, but is certainly centred upon vocalist & guitarist Dave Heumann’s archaically phrased riffs, molten solos & resonant intonations.
His frequently co-written lyrics explore archetypal psychic terrain through characters & motifs which interact profoundly with the weight & wonder that is woven into the heart of their recordings & performance. Their sound is their own, but references to Richard Thompson & Fairport Convention, Earth & even Tinariwen abound, and for good reason. Heumann has played with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Cass McCombs & Papa M, iconoclastic American songwriters with whom he shares an ability to weave an untethered imagination into compositions which are as rewarding lyrically as they are musically unique.
“expanding on the rolling grooves of Song of the Pearl, The Gathering is a sonic monster” – 4/5 MOJO
“a quietly joyous mix of hazy vintage rock, reflective concepts & meditative repetition… startlingly close to perfect” – 9/10 Rocksound.
“thunderous chug & Dave Heumann’s delightfully austere melodies abound, and true transcendence is achieved…” - VICE
“heavy psychedelic, folk-rock quartet Arbouretum are a singular outfit… time spent with their awesome fourth long-player will be well rewarded” - John Doran, 8/10 NME
“simple minor key melodies take on the resonances of pagan hymns, as on the churning, cement-mixer groove of ‘Waxing Crescents’ carried by Brian Carey’s rumbling drum patterns & Corey Allender’s fat fuzz bass… Heumann cuts through the swamp like a backwoods Richard Thompson, fusing folk, droning psychedelic rock & even a touch of Tinariwen’s Tuareg desert blues in his snaking, modal solos.” - The Stool Pigeon, live review.
