Pin Ups welcomes 2012 and takes you to another dimension with an incredible space and sci-fi themed extravaganza: Pin Up Nights: Intergalactic! You can expect loads of lasers, dry ice, and space decorations! Dressing up is thoroughly encouraged!
IN MOONBASE 1 (THE MAIN ROOM)
Our headline live act are Den Haan ( http://soundcloud.com/denhaan ), playing songs from their debut LP “Gods From Outer Space”. Den Haan’s “Release the Beast” is a bit of a Pin Ups disco staple, and the duo are well known for their amazing robo-electronic live performances which showcase what electronicbeats.net calls their “sweaty, grinding man-funk that fuses pulsating disco rhythms, italo and electro influences with a massive wink and a nudge”! Den Haan will be supported by one of our favourite ever bands, the 80s-loving 90s-sampling italo disco juggernaut that is Nevada Base ( http://soundcloud.com/nevadabase ) and the rather superb Talking Heads/Cure-like bunch that are Fiction Faction ( http://soundcloud.com/fictionfaction ) (who have actually been remixed by Nevada Base)!
During and after the bands the Pin Ups chaps will treat you to a seminal selection of space and sci-fi themed songs, and will also welcome a very special “Mystery Spaceman” Guest DJ, whose identity will be a closely guarded secret unless he or she chooses to take off his or her helmet! Who could it be?
IN MOONBASE 2 (THE KITCHEN)
When we heard about the hilarious Edinburgh quiz night “It’s Funtime” we knew we had to get them involved in a Pin Ups. It’s Funtime regularly sells out the Bongo Club in Edinburgh, so it’s brilliant that they’re up for coming to Pin Ups. They are going to present a sci-fi special. We appreciate that folk coming to Pin Ups might not want to enter into a full 2 hour quiz so the It’s Funtime crew are going to split the quiz into 25 minute sections taking place before and between the bands, with several rounds and a winner for each section. They want to keep the details of the quiz a secret, but we understand that one round will involve watching a short “alien invasion” film, while another will involve a “space foods relay race” – but this is just the tip of the meteor (iceberg!). They will also be bringing at least 2 of their life-size robot suits! This cursory description really doesn’t do It’s Funtime justice, so please take a look at their website http://www.its-funtime.com/blogg/, and hopefully you will be as excited about getting involved in it as we are!
Guest DJing after It’s Funtime will be an extraordinary tag-team of Paul Downie from Pelmet Nites (a party which originally started in Dundee in 2006, and is now promoting gigs in Glasgow) and Ally McCrae (presenter of BBC Radio 1 Introducing, and co-creator of the quite berserkly magnificent Detour Scotland).
3...2...1...GAME OVER!
We can also reveal that Pin Up Nights: Intergalactic will be the 3rd last Pin Ups ever! We have decided to announce what we’re calling “3-2-1? to give everybody fair warning and the chance to get along to Pin Ups for at least one last time. After Intergalactic! there will be our annual Pin Up Nights Ladies Night on Friday 24th February (with dreamy Guest DJ Joe Gilgun (Misfits/This is England), new Chemikal Underground signing Miaoux Miaoux, and The Plimptons, playing live, Vendetta Vain performing burlesque, plus loads more TBC) and then finally Pin Up Nights: Game Over on Friday 30th March (for which Sonny Marvello are already booked to play live, again with loads more TBC).
We know a lot of nights talk nonsense about “last evers”, saying they’re ending before returning 6 months later, then cropping up time and again…but for Pin Up Nights this really will be it. Game Over! We will write a more detailed blog shortly to explain our reasons, but basically after 8 years and almost 100 parties, we just want to go out at the top. The last 3 and a half years at the Flying Duck have been especially fantastic and we don’t want to push our luck. Thanks to everybody who has got involved in some pretty great nights.
As usual we’ve tried to keep prices as low as possible for Intergalactic! and despite the amazing array of action on offer advance tickets are available now for a mere FIVER from our online shop at http://www.threadsofsound.com/pinupnights, the bar at the Flying Duck (no booking fee), or Tickets Scotland (instore and online). The door price on the night will be £7.
Cheers and we hope you get along to at least one of the 3-2-1s!
