PIN UP NIGHTS SUMMER CAMP
THE FLYING DUCK 142 RENFIELD STREET
FRIDAY 29TH JULY, 9PM-3AM, £4 (£3 GUEST LIST)
LIVE - EDDY AND THE T-BOLTS, FICTION FACTION, CAMINO REAL
THE PIN UPS DJS PLAYING INDIE, PUNK, SOUL & ELECTROPOP ACROSS 2 ROOMS
With the world and its mother drearily holding "festivals" we have decided to retire the Pin Ups Festival and replace it with the Pin Ups Summer Camp. Us Pin Ups chaps shall be donning red coats, and laying on all sorts of fun and activities. There will be a family-sized ball pool, a death slide, a Pin Ups totem pole for you to dance around, rubber rings, ten pin bowling, a Sega Megadrive, an art class, "Stand By Me" and "Summer Holiday" on the screens and whatever other ideas we pluck from our twisted minds between now and the 29th. Of course, it's not all innocent fun at a Summer Camp, so in the Kitchen we be lowering the lighting, playing some "campfire songs", telling some ghost stories, and inviting you to read what will be a slightly salacious "coming of age drama" edition of the Pin Ups fanzine (which will be handed out free to the first 100 to arrive, along with a Summer Camp badge and a delicious ice lolly)!
No Summer Camp would be complete without some live music, and we have 3 fine bands to entertain all you happy campers. Eddy and the T-Bolts ( http://www.reverbnation.com/eddythetbolts ) promise dirty punk rock and roll with big choruses. One of those big sugary choruses goes like this "my name is John McLean, I'm chasing aeroplanes". Rob the guitarist's previous band was called "Chevy and the Chasers". Eddy himself was the frontman of the Al Pacinos. You should already be smiling and looking forward to seeing them in action! In their previous incarnation as "Casino Brag", Fiction Faction ( http://soundcloud.com/fictionfaction ) played Pin Ups' electronic sister night HLDB last year, and treated a healthy crowd at the Captains Rest to very loud snares and some of the loudest yet melodious basslines known to man. It was like Paul McCartney playing a jet engine, and legend has it that about half the crowd involuntarily soiled their underpants due to the vibrations. By the time they headlined Pin Ups things seemed to have evened out a bit - but does the change of name mean a return to the dance elements? Come along and find out! It's possibly fortuitous that Fiction Faction changed their name as it avoids confusion with Camino Real ( http://soundcloud.com/caminoreal ), a secretive bunch who could be Fiction Faction's more sedate cousins. I'm genuinely not sure how to describe what they sound like - "weird but good" is my best summary to date!
As with last month, we're not gong to be lying scumbags and tell you that the Flying Duck will be all rammed and jumping like it can be during the autumn and winter. However June’s Pin Ups was pretty well attended, and this month we'll continue our summer sale by charging just £4 on the door, and offering you a £3 guestlist if you email pinup_nightsATyahoo.co.uk with names.
Finally it's time for a vulgar plug of events coming up later this year. At the end of August we will be having a HLDB takeover of Pin Ups, meaning the whole thing will be a bit more diverse than usual. In fact, HLDB supremo Butcher Cassidy may be on holiday then, so it maybe more of a plain old "takeover" by various DJs we're pals with. On Friday 30th September we'll be presenting the downright dirty Pin Ups Red Light Night, with the legendary footballer and lady killer Frank McAvennie as a very special guest. "Stones, Beatles, Kinks - but where's the Byrds?" We'll be hosting burlesque performers, For Abel will be playing live, we'll be investing in a new set of red light bulbs for the Duck, playing some sleazy tunes, and inviting everybody to dress up! And on Friday 28th October we'll also be inviting fancy dress at our Halloween event Pin Up Frights, with none other than Carl Barat of the Libertines Guest DJing and Colonel Mustard, Skinny Villains, Mondegreen and Tokamak playing live! It promises to be spooktacular! Advance £6 tickets for both the Red Light Night and Pin Up Frights are available from Tickets Scotland right now, so why not snap some up?
Cheers, and we hope to see all you happy campers on Friday 29th!
