The singular vision of Mordant Music has to make it one of the most interesting and difficult labels of the last few years to sum up. From deep electronic roots (in radiophonics, TV and library music to 90s electronica to dubstep) grow branches in strange and unpredictable directions. Their small catalogue includes 12”s from Shackleton (also of Skull Disco), a remixed Public Information Films DVD ‘MisinforMation’ in collaboration with the BFI, field recordings curated for use as library music, and an album with Thames TV announcer Philip Elsmore presiding over a disintegrating TV station on ‘Dead Air’.

EKOPLEKZ
(mordant music, punch drunk)
A unique analogue-obsessive sound channelling the sparse and grainy dub of Cabaret Voltaire, TG or Robert Rental circa 1980 through a longstanding immersion in Bristol dubstep (he is the man behind he Gutterbreakz blog). Ekoplekz has just released a double C60 cassette ‘Memowrekz’ on Mordant Music to very warm reception, following a previous 12” ‘Distended Dub’/’Stalag Zero’ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label.
Live he uses only a sprawl of analogue gear, playing without sequencing or MIDI putting out warm waves and handspliced oscillator beats. He has recently shared stages with the likes of Shackleton, Ian Helliwell and original Radiophonic Workshop member Dick Mills.

VINDICATRIX
(mordant music)
“David Aird’s recent reworking of Michael Jackson’s Human Nature (Hume) was a high watermark at the turn of 2010. Vindicatrix is SaturnAlien cabaret and the art of the song torn every which way — one of the most remarkable sonic endeavours of recent years. Staking out alien territory from Schubert and sub-bass, between post-rave rhythm and the ruined croon of Scott Walker circa Tilt and The Drift, Vindicatrix will leave you beguiled, baffled and overwhelmed.” Exotic Pylon

NOCHEXXX
(ramp recordings, werk discs)
(custom nochexxx dubplate set)
Cambridge’s NOCHEXXX plays a custom dubplate set.
Recent activities include 12” releases on Darren Cunningham’s (aka Actress) Werk Discs label in collaboration with Sensational and Ramp Recodings, alongside the likes of Zomby. He also contributed a reworking to Xylitol’s ‘Music Played By Other People’ also featuring Belbury Poly and Pete UM.
‘Forever keeping heads on their toes, Werk Records dash this curveball from the brilliant Nochexxx and marmite MC extraordinaire, Sensational, into our path. We really don’t know what the f*ck is going on with ‘Smashing Your System’, it’s like a folder full of Philip Jeck, Throbbing Gristle and Anti Pop Consortium has been corrupted with live protein enzymes, resulting in one confounding bit of beaten oddness. ‘Sinbliss’ is a little easier to grasp, if a mesh of Belgian New Beat with swampy Dub subs and the most disjointed MC in the business is nothing out of the ordinary to you. For us it’s one of the best WTF moments we’ve had in months. Fans of V/Vm and High Priest, it’s all yours!’ Boomkat
