Surreal are London-born writer/rapper Laurence Allen and producer/multi-instrumentalist Tim Rowkins. Based in Brighton, the project has recently attracted significant radio attention, including Steve Lamacq’s Unsigned Artist of the Week and consistent rotation on Radio Fritz, Berlin’s biggest alternative music station.
Rap has connotations; dont be fooled. Laurence is a song-writer, influenced by artists like The Clash, The Jam and Kate Bush. The songs have fast-moving arrangements and killer hooks, with stories evolving around big choruses. Musically, the tracks are varied degrees of collision between classic and modern; pianos, guitars, dirty basslines and drum programming that seems to jump up and spar with the lyrics.
Surreal live is a relatively new venture and the first major show was supporting a Hot Chip DJ set in front of a sell-out crowd.
