Starlings are calling what they do 'Balearic Indie' and the groups they're happy to be compared to include Simple Minds, Heavn 17 and Talk Talk. They're also into - and this is where the Balearic bit comes into play - late-80s acid house. Infusing 90s dance bass lines with tripped-out dub guitars and psychedelic choruses, Starlings are proving that there is much more to their home town of Sheffield's musical future than the rock stylings of Arctic Monkeys. Reclaiming what was once Britain's epicentre of electropop, notable for Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA and the Warp Label, and reminding us that Sheffield was once as close, spiritually and musically, to Detroit and Düsseldorf as it is geographically to Doncaster.
