Shapes / Hold Yr Horse Is / Hymns / Shoes and Socks Off - Birmingham
This is Tomorrow return to the Flapper on Friday 3 September to present 4 of the best noise/post-hardcore/alt bands blasting out of the office stereo, to wet your appetite behold these short but hopefully enticing descriptions:
SHAPES (http://www.myspace.com/weareshapes) formed in 2008 and now stand proud as one of Birmingham’s loudest and most impressive live bands having honed their sound to dramatically tight effect taking influences from These Arms Are Snakes and The Mars Volta, they produce a sound so intricately elaborate you feel you’ve been dragged from the front of the room to the back at exceptional speed while bypassing the ceiling and the floor en route – a wholly violent but enjoyable ride.” The Pasture, The Oil’ released in 2009 on BSM showed signs of masterful musicianship and brilliant song-writing well exceeding their short lifespan. It’s no wonder this lead to them being picked up by Big Scary Monsters as the UK’s reference point for challenging new music. “SHAPES will steal your heart and tear it to shreds without a second thought” – Big Scary Monsters Records
HOLD YR HORSE IS (http://www.myspace.com/hyhi) first graced the This is Tmrw stage at the tail-end of 2009 and this is now their second appearance following a successfully bone crunching set at the recent Off the Cuff Festival. This very fast and very loud post-hardcore three piece hail from the south of England and have just released the appropriately named “Ramming it Home” EP. They take no prisoners with powerful, abrasive punches of melody and rapid drumming, a sure fire “see them now while you can” prospect.
HYMNS (http://www.myspace.com/prayforhymns) are a two piece from Birmingham made up of Samuel Manville (formerly of Blakfish) and former SOS drummer Peter Reisner. Still in it’s infancy but going by what we’ve heard so far this child ain’t gonna behave or be quiet, this will be their debut This is Tmrw show …. though they claim not to be religious in any sense whatsoever don’t be surprised when you’re thanking God you saw them here first.
SHOES AND SOCKS OFF (www.shoesandsocksoff.co.uk) is Tobias Hayes, son, brother, uncle, dude and boo-hoo merchant … the former singer of Meet Me in St.Louis has been playing stubbed-toe blues under the name ’shoes and socks off’ since 2007 …. four albums in and going strong this appearance forms part of a massive UK tour along with Hold Yr Horse is, the best description is as follows from the Big Scary Monsters website: “Tobias tries to grow 2 beards a year, and enjoys listening to Ten Grand, Autolux, Des Ark, The Robot Vs, Nirvana, P J Harvey, Free and has a soft spot for Run DMC, he likes to think he goes about things in a fairly punk kinda way, but isn’t sure if he is pulling it off. He certainly does not like bed-wetting singer-song-writers, facebook, new clothes, or writing his own biography”. – surely reason enough to come down early on Friday 3rd September I hope you agree.
A limited amount of cheap £3 advance tickets are available now from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/88865
