THE PATTERN THEORY [http://www.myspace.com/thepatterntheory]
The Pattern Theory met through a common love of instrumental music and a desire to combine the beauty of rhythmical complexity with the emotional impact of minimal harmonies and melodies. Formed in Leeds, England in spring 2007 they self-released their first EP (EP1), which received excellent reviews (including The Guardian and Drowned in Sound) and extensive radio play (including Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio One show), they re-located to Berlin in 2008.
They have toured the UK and Germany and have shared stages with Icy Demons, Adem and The Drift. Damo Suzuki chose The Pattern Theory as his backing band on his world tour, accompanying him with a fully improvised set.
Live, the band play six instruments simultaneously, with no backing tracks being used at any point. Outside of The Pattern Theory, James drums for The Declining Winter (Hood side project), Carl works with Andrew McInnis (ex-Asva, a Sunn O))) side project) and Lukas plays with Tanita Tikaram.
“Very promising, like Yo La Tengo in mellow mood doing an Ali Farka Toure tribute.” - THE GUARDIAN
"Interweaving individual threads of guitar, bass and drums which fit together into something that’s part melody, part algorithm... like Battles but much more organic." - MANCHESTER MUSIC
CONQUERING ANIMAL SOUND [http://www.myspace.com/conqueringanimalsound]
Conquering Animal Sound is made up of Anneke Kampman and James Scott, residents of Edinburgh, UK. A musical project in it’s infancy but one that is filled with much promise and potential. Already making great waves within the musical community of Edinburgh their live show is something of awe-inspiring greatness, creating loops, beats and samples out of anything and everything with Anneke’s sumptuous vocal’s carrying the sounds to what seems like a new world.
A debut album is in the works - set to be released via Gizeh Records/Mini50 after the Summer months have passed. In the meantime a split release is planned for May and big things are predicted for the band in 2010.
"Meticulously built up vocal, laptop and electric guitar loops that evolve into spookily charming minimalist incantations." - THE LIST
"Kampman’s gorgeous intone floats telepathically into the tapestry of guitar and loops created by Scott. Recalling the minimalistic dalliances of Scandinavian progressives Múm, CAS are quite unlike anything you’ll hear in Scotland today." - THE SCOTSMAN
JUFFAGE [http://www.myspace.com/juffage]
Juffage is Jeff T. Smith, a solo sound artist and multi-instrumentalist from Leeds, via Chicago. He is often seen in bars, art galleries, or basements with a band’s worth of instruments. A recording enthusiast at heart, he has spent time in some of Chicago’s finest studios including Engine (w/ Brian Deck) and Electrical Audio (w/ Steve Albini). Live shows see him coming up with inventive new ways of bringing his multi-layered recordings to the stage. Through the use of cassettes, drums, guitars, and assorted other loop-pedals and gadgets, Juffage creates complex, yet surprising catchy pop songs.
Juffage performances have been compared to a synthesis of Lightning Bolt's rhythmic ferocity, Radiohead's lush pop sensibility, King Tubby’s manipulative production, and Andrew Bird’s ability to make a good loop. The result is loud, frantic, and often beautiful. In 2008, he somehow fit all his music gear into a station wagon and played over 100 shows across the US, before setting off for the UK and Europe. In July/August 2009 yet another self-booked U.S. tour of the east-coast and midwest followed. In September 2009, he moved to Leeds, England.
