new release from buzzin fly - alex santos & chris woodward
Alex Santos and Chris Woodward
Village Vanguard
OUT MONDAY 25TH JANUARY
Lisbon's Alex Santos and London's Chris Woodward are respectively two of the fundamental cornerstones of Buzzin' Fly.
Alex was one of Ben Watt's first signings back in 2003 when he was picked up as part of the much-respected production trio Rodamaal (other members: Lyon's Rocco and Manoo) for their debut release, 'Musica Feliz'. Rodamaal followed it with the vintage classic 'Insomnia' in 2006, before Alex went on to form his own side project with Luis Leite, Darkmountaingroup, where he cooked up one of the label's biggest ever tracks with 'Lose Control'.
Chris also joined Buzzin' Fly in 2003, winning a competition to become the then nascent label's new London resident DJ to spin alongside label boss Ben Watt, and spent his first five years playing a key role in the imprint's respected London events at The End, Plastic People and Neighbourhood. Last year he finally moved into the studio to learn his production craft with mentors such as Justin Drake from Peace Division, and picked up acclaim for his reworkings of Foals' 'Olympic Airways' and L Kubic's 'Voyager'.
Scroll forward to 2009, and earlier this year, following a gig together in Portugal, Alex and Chris teamed up in Alex's studio and laid down the foundations for a collaboration. The result is 'Village Vanguard'. Centred around an irresistible Gil-Evans-style orchestral jazz phrase (that had them hanging off the ceiling on the Space Terrace in Ibiza when Ben roadtested an early mix in September) the track comes in two flavours, a main mix and a stripped back re-rub from Chris. Deep, swinging with serious uplift, simply light the blue touch-paper and stand well back.
