Dead Confederate at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen 01/12/09
There's a new breed of dark, raw, mind-blowing psych-rock crawling from the South, and its name is Dead Confederate.
They've already shared the stage with R.E.M. A Place To Bury Strangers, Drive By Truckers, Deerhunter, Black Lips and a European support tour with Dinosaur Jr. and are looking forward to playing a headline show at London's Hoxton Bar & Kitchen.
“There’s no shortage of buzzwords to ascribe to Georgia psyche-rock five-piece Dead Confederate. Controlled, grunge-driven guitars, fronted by the soulful howls that drags downbeat instrumentation into pure emotion. Sharp songwriting perfectly blend highs and lows in a bittersweet debut. Don’t miss out!” Rocksound 8 out of 10
The Onion – “Dead Confederate's alt-country/grunge hybrid doesn't just feel like a compelling debut, it feels like a compelling new genre.”
Rolling Stone – “"I caught only the last quarter-hour of Dead Confederate's set opening for R.E.M. at SXSW this year. But even that short shot of the Athens, Georgia, quintet's buckskin-metal racket was enough to confirm (a) Dead Confederate are even better than their name and (b)could give My Morning Jacket a very hard time in Dixie-guitar-hurricane combat.”
Pitchfork - "the Georgia five-piece receives perfect marks for settling on a name that reads exactly like what it implies: the first in what is sure to be a wave of new, poker-hot bands that puree alt-country tropes together with the muddy crash of grunge-- specifically in the unmistakable, steamrolling style of a one Kurt Donald Cobain. They are a band out of time, not place."
Daily Telegraph (on the bands SXSW 2009 performance) – “For me, most impressive were Dead Confederate, a hairy US Radiohead.”
