PRE-SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST PARTY [Liverpool] feat. Dirtblonde + The Manhattan Love Suicides!
LIVERPOOL CALLING (http://www.myspace.com/liverpoolcalling ) is back on Wednesday 11th March, once again bringing some fine bands & good music for a jolly good rock'n'roll time!
The event takes place at the cool Leaf Cafe (http://www.thisisleaf.co.uk/) on 27 Parliament St (opposite Cains brewery) voted by The Guardian as one of the Top 10 places to eat in Liverpool; and one of the best new venues in Liverpool - and, now, a place that also ROCKS!!!
The Liverpool Calling on 11th march will be a pre-South By Southwest warm-up gig for two bands who are playing at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas: Dirtblonde (Liverpool) and The Manhattan Love Suicides (Leeds, for the first time playing in Liverpool). Plus special guests Kissing Kalina, from London.
DOORS 8pm, entry £3
DIRTBLONDE (http://www.dirtblonde.co.uk)
“They look and sound like a cross between Sid & Nancy and Bonnie’n’ Clyde fed through a fuzz box. The guitarist looks like he's been on a crash course of rock n roll behaviour with The Cribs...[he] ends up trashing the set, and smashing his guitar into a glass bottle at the entrance of the venue. They seem to leave the audience speechless." - BBC
“Continuing the grand tradition of sleaze-punk merchants like The Voidoids and The Jesus And Mary Chain...” The Fly magazine
“Far more abrasive intent than any NYC wannabe... you don’t have a Jack and Meg, you have more of Sid & Nancy meets natural born killers Mickey and Mallory. Lovely" ManchesterMusic Website
THE MANHATTAN LOVE SUICIDES (http://www.myspace.com/themls)
For anyone who loves fuzzed up guitar assaults, feedback, hit and run gigs, female vocals, melodic pop, ear splitting minimalist noise and hates a hell of a lot of other things...
"The Manhattan Love Suicides saturate their cotton-in-the-ear live sound with distortion and feedback, clothe themselves in light-soaking black duds, and are known for their affinity for gig brevity. Like the Jesus and Mary Chain, the group delights in the ecstasy of noise.he Manhattan Love Suicides saturate their cotton-in-the-ear live sound with distortion and feedback, clothe themselves in light-soaking black duds, and are known for their affinity for gig brevity." Stylus Magazine
+ special guests!
KISSING KALINA (www.myspace.com/kissingkalina )
"The Ronettes on heroin"
"Sleazy Popsters" - Time Out Magazine
"Monstrous black-clad pop songs from lauded band. Expect a tirade of Mary Chain/Psychedelic Furs feedback and fuzz, but not at the expense of some gloriously heady melodies" - Shot By Both Sides
LIVERPOOL CALLING @ LEAF CAFE - WED 11th MARCH - DON'T MISS IT!
About Liverpool Calling: Formerly called "F*CK" (when we had a Korova residency) the club continues the tradition of always booking fresh new local talent and cool acts who haven't played in Liverpool before. Amongst the acts who played their first gigs in Liverpool we can mention Popular Workshop, Dead Kids, Underground Railroad, Theoretical Girl, Artrocker-cover stars Nelson, Pravda, Capsula, Candy Panic Attack, Wry, joe Dangerous, The Bacchae, Penny Broadhurst, the Leatherettes, Ruby Tombs, Billy Ruffian, and alt-rock legend Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening/ K Records). The View played their first official headline gig at our club (a pity they were not as good as The Libertines...)
We always strived to book the best new bands in Liverpool, and bands who played for us include: Asbos, Novice Mathematic, Jewel Thief, Blackwood Articles, The Affection, Sex Education, The Immigrants, Heads Of State, Fraktures, Little Fields, Your Daily Briefing, Straight Out Of Moscow, Esa, Emily M, Sheepy, The 10p Mixes, and others.
We're also the only people in Liverpool (as far as we know) who regularly play new, unsigned acts on our DJ sets.
