BASS CLEF
Unofficially, Bristol and east London are twinned musical towns, the sound of both being heavy, sparse, dubbed-out plates of bass and drum, from the just-cut whites of dubstep back through d'n'b and jungle, all the way to the original JA sources. Ralph Cumbers - Bass Clef - is the human manifestation of this secret geographical synching, having lived, worked, recorded and performed in both places. Recording analogue basslines, and whipsmart drum programming onto four-track tape, Bass Clef is the sound of structure created, Black Ark-style, on the fly in the mixdown through guitar pedals and FX units. Tricky like AFX but as warm and disarming as a bear hug off the Pastels.

Inspired by the likes of Cassius, LCD Soundsystem and Soulwax, RLE produce the kind of throbbing electro that reduces dancefloors to atoms and clubbers to wildly-vibrating primordial elements. RLE has supported the likes of the Klaxons, Shychild, Crystal Castles and Errors and performed at Reading and Leeds plus Manchester’s In The City last year.
