THE VAPOUR TRAIL
FRIDAY JANUARY 16TH 2009
PAUL HAWKINS & THEE AWKWARD SILENCES
Headlining what may turn out to be the most exciting Vapour Trail yet are Paul Hawkins and Thee Awkward Silences. Having released their awesome debut album, 'We Are Not Other People' earlier in 2008, the band continue to play what have been described as the most exciting live shows in London. This isn't hyperbole - Paul is well known for his manic stage presence and has occasionally ended gigs virtually naked. When you hear his music, the reason for all the excitement becomes clear - sometimes billed as 'anti-folk', it is upbeat, refreshing and original, utilising all manner of instruments including synthesisers and violins. Lyrically, Paul is a classically English, often bleak and always very witty storyteller, and has already bettered the words of Nick Cave, a man he has been compared to, along with Tom Waits, Morrissey and Neil Hannon. Basically, the end result of this concoction is something fabulous and very exciting. You'd be frankly stupid to miss it.

THE FIRM
We have been described as many things, often ranging from "really good" to "a bit shit", but people have picked up on the fact that we try and combine elements of psychedelia, shoegazing, post punk and pop, dress it up in leather and give it some sarky poetry to whistle. Or something, anyway. We recorded our debut single, "If You Don't Want To Know Life's Dismal Results" with The Enemy producer Matt Terry and it's really good, I reckon. It will be released on Whimsical Records on March 9th and will hopefully coincide with some good weather, but probably won't.

THE DROWNERS
Now co-hosting The Vapour Trail with us after Simon joined the DJ team full time, The Drowners return to the Vapour stage in promotion of their current CD, which may well be available free on the night. Inspired by 'Holy Bible'-era Manics and 'Faith/Pornography'-era Cure, their sound also references the anger of Nirvana, the epic grandeur of Radiohead, the sweeping rock of Smashing Pumpkins and the taut urgency of Bloc Party. They will be watched very closely by all in 2009 and if there's any sense in the world, will make a huge impact.

THE GAA GAAS
Originally from Jersey and residing in Brighton, The Gaa Gaas are yet another band who are destined for great things in 2009 and are ideal for kickstarting the year with. Also responsible for the nationally-distributed 'Bulb Gash' magazine, and also clubnight 'The Bulb Bash', they are clearly people after our own hearts and a true inspiration. Their music has been described as 'manic jazz punk' and they have already been played by Huw Stephens on Radio 1. It is a fabulous noise and brings to mind bands such as The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, The Stooges and The Cure. We urge you not to miss them - you will kick yourself in the future if you do.
