Damnably Birthday-2 gigs in one day Dec 6th with Calvin Party/Lazarus Clamp/MJ Hibbett/Former Utopia & Silver Rocket DJ's
Hi!
It is Birthday time!
Damnably is now a bit over 2 years old and we have put on over 40 bands including Thee More Shallows, Chris Brokaw, and Pw Long. We upheld our DIY anti pay to play principals and actually paid bands a fair amount, podcasted over a years worth of John Peel style bi-weekly Radio Shows and frequently got gig of the week in Time Out and were even voted Club of the week in The Guardian!
To celebrate this momentous occasion it gives us great pleasure to announce we have 2 super special shows on one day! The first is at that Rough Trade Saturday afternoon institution The ROTA (Notting Hill Arts Centre 4pm-8pm and totally FREE!) with Calvin Party/Lazarus Clamp/Former Utopia and the amazing SILVER ROCKET Dj's
Calvin Party Were One of John Peel's favourite bands who began to forge their very own idiosyncratic intellectual arty Post Punk back in the late 80's Lancashire. They recorded a total of 8 Peel sessions and have just released their forth LP 'Godard's Girlfriend' on the legendary Probe Plus label (home to 'Half Man Half Biscuit').
"the greatest undiscovered band" John Peel ... no less!
"joyous art noise" NME
"a cross between The Fall and Syd Barrett" NME
Lazarus Clamp have been at it since 93' and played SXSW in 2001, gigged with Giant sand, The New Year, Richard Buckner, Chris Brokaw and just released their 4th LP on Bearos.
"Lazarus Clamp are one of the minor, undiscovered, rough-cut gems of British independent music" Drowned In Sound
"Rather wonderful" The Big Issue
"Lazarus Clamp post-rock triumphantly" NME
"Delicate and subtle dynamic" The Guardian
Former Utopia Possibly, the only indigenous cockney still remaining in East London. FU is a genre hopping song smith as happy skronking out furious post-punk on a modified 6 string bass or quirky black humoured alt. folk on a raggedy acoustic. He has gigged with Chris Brokaw, The Thalia Zedek band, Swell, Mick Turner (Dirty Three) and P.W Long. George also plays with The Philanthropists and Chiara Meatelli & Violeta García López as 'More Bad Times' and these 2 shows will sport a host of guest appearances.
"like (smog) on holiday in shellac" Drowned in Sound
Silver Rocket DJ's
"Excellent, excellent night, I can recommend it very highly" John Kennedy XFM
"reliably wild underground wild rock night....super leftfield DJ's" Time Out

MJ Hibbett is arguably the most loveable character in ROCK! and a favourite of Radio 1, Radio 3, Radio 6 and Xfm! MJ Hibbett and the Validators had over 2 Million downloads in the first 2 weeks of its release of their internet hit (Hey Hey 16k). MJ Hibbett has supported Echo & The Bunnymen on the ukelele, had an album of the year in Rolling Stone, written a book that got his editor fired, stayed out drinking longer than Nick Cave and Shane McGowan put together and performs over 70 gigs a year worldwide. He has released 4 albums and countless ep’s, singles and even cassettes on his very own DIY 'artists against success' label.
MJ Hibbett does optimistic twee indie pop and sounds like the well adjusted lovechild of Billy Bragg, The Wedding Present and Harry Hill.
Everett True, Plan B:
Reasons to love We Validate! First up, it sounds like obscure literate sarcastic post-Fall mid-eighties Peel-beloved pop band Yeah Yeah Noh. Second, it lists Gary Barlow next to Morrissey as one of Manchester's greatest songwriters. Third, it smarts. Fourth, they claim that, alongside two million other folk - a troupe of Canadian Mounted Police and a classroom full of Norwegian kids are in love with their universal love song 'The Gay Train'. Fifth, violins, Wedding Present guitars and an eye for the ridiculous is a potent combination. Sixth... ah, fuck this.” This is brimful of quirky melodies, sordid biographical details…- what's not to love? “
Damnably presents is a non profit making anti ‘pay to play’ DIY promotion team that plays John Peel shows between bands and was set up in 2006 as our friends could not get decent London shows. Damnably releases are due soon and we do a bi-weekly Damnably Radio show @
