JAY REATARD, LOVVERS LIVE AT THE BODEGA NOTTINGHAM SATURDAY 22ND NOVEMBER
What an incredible show this is going to be!
JAY REATARD
Such is the Taz-like clip with which Reatard has cranked out micro-epics since the release of his incredible solo debut, 2006's Blood Visions. That garage-punk opus spawned many of the cuts on Singles 06-07, the singles compilation released by the In the Red label just four months ago. Now he's back with Matador Singles '08, a collection of limited-edition singles recorded and released, like the title promises, this year for Matador. Harnessing his hyperactive work rate, Reatard's new home let him loose in what seems to be his natural habitat, encouraging him to headbutt a variety of sounds before recording a follow-up full-length. 8/10 Pitchforkmedia
This is bloody stuff – murder and, erm, arse-rape are dealt with – with the sleigh bells’n’ sodomy of ‘Hammer I Miss You’ (“And the boys in the alleyway are bending at the knees/Trying to find a lonely thing/Trying to find something to please”) a backward highlight. Yes, it’s dirty work (see the lo-fi DVD included) but under the shards and stains there is melody in every track. Reatard’s motto is fulfilled: no quality control, just quality. A leash, Mr and Mrs Reatard? Darn, a claw-hammer couldn’t pin Jay down. NME 8/10
LOVVERS
Bruised, but never unduly bruising; angry yet not once overly acerbic; do away with tinny headphones, computer speakers and polite decibel levels – let this scrappy, beautiful, brilliant record consume you. 9/10 DIS review of Lovvers EP "Think" on Wichita
