Damnably Presents Calvin Party/Lazarus Clamp/MJ Hibbett& Former Utopia
It is Birthday time!
Damnably is now a bit over 2 years old (in London anyway) and we have put on over 40 bands including legends Chris Brokaw, PW Long and Thee More Shallows. We upheld our DIY anti 'pay to play' ethos and managed to pay bands fairly and even bought a drum kit when one band couldn't afford a van to transport their own down. We frequently got gig of the week in Time Out and were even voted Club of the week in The Guardian!
We also held the really crazy 'world international' (Smog)/The Fall/John Peel and Sonic Youth Days and Podcasted over a years worth of BiWeekly John Peel style radio shows @ www.damnably.com . Best of all we met John Peel's daughter Flossie and made a load of wonderful new friends all over the world!
To celebrate our Birthday we have 2 super special shows on one day! The first is at that Rough Trade Saturday institution 'The Rota' with Calvin Party and guests and the second is;
Calvin Party, Lazarus Clamp, MJ Hibbett & Former Utopia on December 6th @THE WILMINGTON ARMS.
69 Roseberry Avenue,Clerkenwell,London,EC1R 4RL.

Calvin Party www.myspace.com/calvinparty
One of John Peel's favourite bands who began to forge their very own idiosyncratic intellectual arty Post Punk back in the late 80's Lancashire.
Calvin Party recorded a total of 8 Peel sessions and have just released their forth LP 'Godard's Girlfriend' on the legendary Probe Plus label (home to 'Half Man Half Biscuit').
"the greatest undiscovered band" John Peel ... no less!
"joyous art noise" NME
"a cross between The Fall and Syd Barrett" NME
Lazarus Clamp www.myspace.com/lazarusclamp
have been at it since 93' and played sxsw in 2001, gigged with Giant sand, The New Year, Richard Buckner, Chris Brokaw and just released their 4th LP on Bearos.
"Lazarus Clamp are one of the minor, undiscovered, rough-cut gems of British independent music." Drowned In Sound.
"Rather wonderful." The Big Issue.
"Lazarus Clamp post-rock triumphantly." NME.
"Delicate and subtle dynamics." The Guardian.
MJ Hibbett
Perhaps the most loveable character in ROCK! and a favourite of Radio 1, Radio 3 and Radio 6!.
MJ Hibbett had over 3 Million downlaods of his internet hit (16k) and now does over 60 gigs a year worldwide. He has released a 4 albums and heaps of eps on his very own 'artists against success' label and is an inspiration to all DIY'ers!
Some say he is the new Billy Bragg, some say he is the new Wedding Present and some even say he is the new Harry Hill but I think he's the same old Mark Hibbett who played the very first Damnably show back in 1994 (when he starred in a youthful pop band).
Mark is destined to become a God of the Indie world so catch him now while he is still mortal!
Former Utopia
Possibly, the only indigenous cockney still remaining in East London. Former Utopia (George Gargan for the main) is an iconoclastic genre hopping intellectual sombre song smith as happy skronking out furious post-punk on a modified 6 string bass or quirky black humoured alt. folk on a raggedy acoustic. His songs offer intricate, fragile and intensely beautiful insights into his quirky vision of the world. He has gigged with Chris Brokaw, Thalia Zedek, Thee More Shallows, PW Long, Mick Turner (Dirty Three) and Swell.
"like (smog) on holiday in shellac" Drowned in Sound
