Composer Jozef Van Wissem is renowned for his unusual approach of the Renaissance lute. He cuts and pastes classical pieces, reverses melodies, adds electronics and processed field recordings; the unusual wedlock of composition and improvisation creates an unheard amalgam of contemporary folk and late Renaissance music. Although he uses subtle electronic sound manipulation, he has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. He also runs the Incunabulum label, and performs extensively around the world. He also works with M.B. / Maurizio Bianchi, James Blackshaw, Tetuzi Akiyama, Gary Lucas and Elliot Sharp. Wire Magazine called his latest solo lute cd " Stations of the Cross " a small masterpiece.

English acoustic guitarist C Joynes, a resident of Cambridge, has released 3 albums, issued by the likes of BO' WEAVIL and THE GREAT POP SUPPLEMENT. He has also recorded a live broadcast session for Andy Kershaw on BBC Radio 3. He has played extensively across the UK and Ireland, sharing bills with performers including: Alasdair Roberts, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Jack Rose, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Sir Richard Bishop and Steffan Basho-Junghans.
"Joynes has a heavy thumb-led finger-picking technique that harks back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime. However, he uses this technique to explore alternative melodic traditions: the English folk-tune; North and West African music; elements of classical Indian music; proto-minimalist and impressionist musics from the European classical tradition..."
