*** Sonic Cathedral’s last two services for this month are the first ever UK gigs by School Of Seven Bells, the new band formed by Benjamin Curtis (ex-Secret Machines) and the Deheza sisters (from On!Air!Library!). We love this band a lot, which is why we released their debut single last year. Since then they’ve recorded ‘Alpinisms’ which is, quite simply, album of the year; otherworldly, shoegazey pop (as in proper songs the milkman could whistle), with hints of the Cocteaus, MBV, La Düsseldorf and ’60s Argentinian psych. Do yourself a favour and buy it when it comes out on November 17. In the meantime, get yourself down to these shows. And if SVIIB weren’t enough incentive to come along, in support we’ve got Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, whose single (the double A-side of ‘Within The Boundaries’ and ‘Benjamin’s Room’) we are releasing on Monday October 27. This band must be seen to be believed; they create amazing guitar landscapes to underpin Daniel’s stunningly soulful vocals, which have been described by no less an organ than The Guardian as “like the spawn of Liz Fraser and Antony Hegarty in space”. We can’t argue with that. Anyway, enough hyperbole, here are the details:
