With a vocal style somewhere between Cerys Matthews and Bjork and lyrical storytelling akin to Morrissey at his best, Gnu and the Shrew stand out like beacon. ?Bingo and Gas Board Fraud are comical slices of reality with minimal instrumentation. There are only a handful of contemporary artists with the talent to strip down to this level and still deliver.?Songs like 1854 are intriguingly crafted with almost ornamental detail.
