The Mae Shi/Johnny Foreigner/Pygmy Globetrotters in Sheffield 20th May
We are super excited about this one, THE MAE SHI are all the way from Los Angeles, yes in America! Taking the DIY tack to a new level, The Mae Shi have been together since 2002 and have self-released various recordings over the years in America only.
This year saw their debut UK release it will have no doubt astounded, enthraled, confused, excited and blown your mind in equal measures - ‘HLLYH’ is a perfect mish-mash of pretty much the whole spectrum of musical genres. Key artists they cite as influential include Ex Models, Deerhoof, Sparks, Brian Eno, Andrew WK, Jay-Z, Abba, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Captain Beefheart, the Motown catalogue, the Slits, Queen diva house, Iron Maiden, Squeeze, 90s trance, XTC, Don Caballero, Missy Elliott, the Minutemen and Detroit Techno (and that’s not even all of them).
It’s an invigorating collection of songs that will lift spirits throughout the British winter gloom. They have perfected their live craft and road tested these songs to salivating industry types at world famous SXSW festival, and now they coming all the way to SHEFFIELD just for you, we think you deserve it.
Don't take our word for it:
"There are echoes of The Blood Brothers and Les Savy Fav here, spread across tracks that fluctuate between crunching riffs and 8-bit FX....It’s impossible not to be awed by the urgency of their performance" [Downed In Sound]
"Exploding every single genre ever (except maybe dubstep) kind of like a hairier Test Icicles." [NME]

In support we have Birmingham's JOHNNY FOREIGNER specialise in the kind of melodic, unpredictable and utterly vital indie-rock that point blank refuses to adhere to current trends. They could be a headline act in their own right.
“Forward-thinking young guitar-slingers...turbo-charged, noisy and downright promising” NME
"…a breathless, deathless rush of possibilities, Ritilan rock exploding with ideas and imagination." Kerrang!
“Some of the most exciting indie-pop sounds put to record by a British band in a long while… domestic debut release of the year – hands down.” Drowned In Sound

And from closer to home we have PYGMY GLOBETROTTERS, they are self described as excelling in "Beeps, Bangs and Guitar Twangs" what that means to us is they make exceptionally well crafted electronic tinged, future danceable classics, all this to top off a most tantalising threesome.

If that isn't enough for you, we have some extra special guest DJ's for a little post band disco.
