Free Jazz Fiends in Cambridge...?
On Sunday 18th may (that's next sunday) the Alexander Hawkins Ensemble come
to Cambridge to play a gig at Churchill College Recital Room. Featuring 5
of the most exciting up-and-coming improvisors in the country alongside the
internationally-renowned multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson, the lineup
is as follows:
- Alexander Hawkins - piano (who has played with Guy Barker, Evan Parker,
Eddie Prevost and Steve Waterman, among others)
- Orphy Robinson - steel pan & percussion (Don Cherry, Lester Bowie, Andy
Sheppard..as well as the Jazz Warriors)
- Otto Fischer - guitar (Derek Bailey, Alex Ward, as well as a number of
albums showcasing his songwriting)
- Dominic Lash (Four tet/Steve Reid ensemble, Evan Parker, John Butcher,
Taylor Ho Bynum)
- Hannah Marshall (Seb Rochford/Polar Bear, Steve Beresford, Ingrid
Laubrock)
- Javier Carmona (Ashley Wales of Spring Heel Jack, Tony Bevan, John
Edwards)
As an ensemble, the group marry jazz and non-idiomatic improvisation,
creating a unique and uplifting sound. An evening of exciting and
challenging improvisation is promised - the group will play original
compositions, plus music from the likes of Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, Anthony
Braxton, Joseph Jarman, Wadada Leo Smith and others.
The gig starts at 8pm at Churchill College Recital Room (a map can be found

it would be great to see as many people as possible down there - it'll be a
challenging and exciting gig, and it's not often that you get players of
this quality in cambridge. take an hour out of exam revision and get
yourselves down! it's only £4 and it's going to be something else! let me
