Following on from the roaring success of last year’s collaboration with thegirlwith… we have decided to join forces once more in the name of good music, art, and access. Usual rules apply, so expect the normal levels decadence and debauchery. thegirlwith… will be bringing a selection of the finest, most talented, and diverse artists to grace the shores of the Thames, along with their usual clique of visual artists. Expect an intimately sensual experience, designed to touch all tastes, and stimulate all senses. With projected visuals to complement the beautiful acoustics, it shall be a night to remember…
Headlining the night will be the up-and-coming Revere, who are all set to explode onto the scene. On the back of their inspiring Chloroform ep, they are destined for great success. These guys are going to be huge. Trying to categorise the music of Revere is becoming increasingly difficult. You’re likely to hear fragments of everything from achingly simplistic lullabies to full-on unrelenting walls of sound, bringing elements of gypsy marches, klezmer, post rock, film scores and gospel into a truly unique sound. Both live and on record, they immerse their audience in their feverish approach to layering up such diverse influences as Jeff Buckley, Bjork, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Carl Stalling, John Zorn, Danny Elfman, and Nino Rota… Revere have recently expanded their line-up beyond the conventional “tried-and-tested” - incorporating trumpet, violin, cello and percussion - but it has never been Revere’s intention to fit in with convention. The resulting songs pulse with a density of ideas… a sound both intimate and cinematic in its scope, fusing melancholic words with euphoric music. In a musical climate lazily looking to the past for brief flings with excitement, Revere stand out as a band writing music set solidly in the now…
“One of the best bands you’ve never heard of…” The Guardian Weekend
Supporting Revere are They Don’t Sleep, a four piece outfit based in Camden, who formed in the Spring of 2004. They Don’t Sleep create weeping keyboard led tales of melancholy, and cinematic soundscapes that draw on influences as diverse as their music. Inspired by such bands as A Silver Mt. Zion and Explosions in the Sky, they sound as much like Mogwai as Mozart. Fresh from their success of supporting 65daysofstatic, Redjetson, and Revere on their nationwide tour, They Don’t Sleep return to the capital for more of their minimalist ambience and post-rock textures. “Flirting between painfully desolate piano sections and deafening six string assaults… They could soundtrack a million bruised souls who have lost something cherished, before losing control and reeling around in despair and anguish… The band may not sleep, but you’ll rarely have felt so awake” Drownedinsound.com
We also have Third Law, a three piece rock n' roll band hailing from Luton. With the limited release of their Goat Club album fully sold out, they are fulfilling their dreams of world domination by building their own studio. Third Law break modern conventions with their music, combining the rawness of the Buzzcocks, the darkness of Joy Division, and the madness of Adam and the Ants, to create two minute epics, that sound nothing like their contemporaries. Whilst you may presume that their name was taken from the famous Einstein theory, it was actually lifted from Kirsty’s Third Law… explaining why coffee goes cold when you leave it.
Opening the night will be the acousticaustica of Hibakusha. Some of you may remember that he set the tone for the night last time we collaborated, with his wonderfully enchanting set. The audience was mesmerised by his epic voice and folksy guitar, Hibakusha is an artist who can touch your soul and break your heart. After growing up in a small country town, he was corrupted by the bright lights, and the assumption that his guitar could kill fascists. Whilst staying true to his punk roots, and taking notes from underground hip-hop, Hibakusha also draws from idols such as Mark Eitzel, and Lydia Lunch, to create his own brand of folk music, that reaches deep and sucks you in.
