Matt Elliot in Manchester - Tue 31st May
Pop Art vs. Industry presents:
MATT ELLIOTT + MANYFINGERS + PINKY MCCLURE & JOHN WILLS
Tue 31st May @ Star & Garter, Fairfield St, Manchester
£5 adv
Experiments in acoustic and electronic sound from the former Flying Saucer Attack member, previously known as Third Eye Foundation, producer of a string of albums, singles, remix projects on the legendary Planet Records and Lindas Strange Vacation but mostly Domino. Moving far from his Bristol lo-fi origins (partly due to moving to rural France and striking up an acquaintance with the fabled wormwood) his sound is now a dirty but blissed out mixture of Arvo Part, Photek, Spaceman 3, Popol Vuh and Coil. This tour is in support of his new classically alcohol-drenched and beautiful deranged long player . "Drinking Songs" on the independent French label Ici D'Aillieurs. Deeper and darker than last year's "The Mess We Made" (Domino), "Drinking Songs" approaches European folk from across the continent, complicating and layering seemingly simple music to create incredibly moving soundscapes, punctuated by Proustian lyrics. Live, Matt simply relies on live looping of guitar, vocals and other noises to conjure up a one-man orchestra from scratch, with staggering results.
Support comes from Matt's sometime cohort, cellist Chris Cole, aka Manyfingers (seek out the gentle cacophony of his eponymous album on The Remote Viewer's Moteer imprint), and the captivating Faun Fables-esque avant-folk of Pinky McClure & John Wills.
