WHILE OTHER BANDS PARK VANS
Its August, Its Manchester and its raining, summer washed away months ago so what better way to avoid the wet and get yourself all snug in a trendy venue. Well a select group of people did. Trof in fact, a unique little venue hidden in the depths of the uber cool Northern Quarter.. or as Guy (Shot by a Pistol Slug) insisted was Ancoats, but with a better name!
It all started with solo artist Phil Higgins(www.myspace.com/philhigginsband), fresh from a major Tameside Hippodrome gig and several appearances at acoustic venues in Manchester.. A nice mellow start to the evening to welcome the crowd into this venue, nice guitar and smooth vocals proved this lad is an excellent acoustic act and not to be missed out on... favourite track of the night 'Don't Look Back'..
Next on stage the fantastic young band Harrington(www.myspace.com/harringtonuk), thanks to a last minute bulletin on myspace this band almost instantly took the slot and what a great band to take up on the last minute offer... As the gig was acoustic the full 3 piece had to be stripped down, Jake (lead singer) on guitar accompied by Sean playing guitar to add a bassy feel to the tracks.. The audience were very much into the lads, singing about nights out in Manchester and being wrecked, this band have the swagger big enough for bigger venues, so to get the cance to witness the lads in such a small intimate venue was a treat.. Tracks such as Shakes in Brannigans and a cover of the Libertines classic 'Up the Bracket' with Nathan from band Them Next Door adding backing vocals really impressed the small crowd! Harrington are a good band with catchy songs and confidence to match be sure to catch them in coming months..
Next on Shot by a Pistol Slug(www.myspace.com/shotbyapistolslug), now to look at this chap you wouldnt be able to imagine the voice that comes out of his mouth, when Guy (SBaPS) took to the stage and started singing, everyone was amazed, 'Is that actually coming from him??' .. A completely unique/smoky/reverbed voice was what came out of Guys mouth, a definate talent on the stage here at Trof.. The upbeat tune 'Kick Start' was a definate hit with the audience and was a truly enjoyable performance, this act should be renamed 'The Voice'.. if you havent seen this guy live you better had do... or else!!!
To end the night it was Danny Mahon(www.myspace.com/dannymahon), with his truly Manc vocals and lyrics that were easily associable with, almost like a story teller, but in song form.. My favourite song of the night 'AK47' a great track, and well sung, rave reviews on his myspace from his pals and following to say this was his best performance yet.. The venue was the kind of venue to showcase Dannys talents.. Im sure he will be here again sometime soon!!
So all in all a great Night for more information on the future events check the myspace www.myspace.com/whileotherbandsparkvans
