Ólafur Arnalds, the prodigious Icelandic neo-classical composer, turns food critic as he gives us a guide to dining out in Reykjavík.»
Promising and good indie-pop group Veronica Falls have already landed two single songs of a beautiful quality upon us this year, one of which had a wonderful video. They were 'Found Love In A Graveyeard' and the magnificently woeful (as in full of woe..) 'Beachy Head'. They will release their debut album at the end of this month, but now they've got a slice of that record for you to download, entirely for free.»
It's now about a month or so until the double-header of December ATPs take place. I'm not sure if these still count as the celebration of a decade of All Tomorrow's Parties but what the hell, there's some celebrating to be done! Especially with the announcement of new and fresh acts for the Bowlie 2 Weekender, which runs from December 10-12.»
Exciting times for fans of brilliant orchestral and experimental music, as the ultra-talented Ben Frost of Bedroom Community semi-fame, is all set to work with Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason, scoring not a film, but a book, a novel (via Iceland Music Export).»
Plenty of people seemed fairly repelled by Patrick Wolf's "new" direction, which he took for last year's The Bachelor. Surprising. We actually quite liked it. The news now is that he's returning with a brand new single later in the year, in December to be precise (via FactMag).»
A couple of songs performed at Corsica Studios by Silje Nes. »
New YSP video.»
Pixies are a loving bunch, aren't they? The other week they played their longest ever set - 33 songs - to mark the successful rescue of the 33 trapped miners in Chile. That must've been quite something. Now they're giving away the whole of their 2004 reunion set a Coachella away for free, to celebrate the launch of their new website (via Pitchfork).»
Seems like a sensible idea.»
The multinational London-based indie-pop group Allo Darlin' have produced one of the best albums of the year in their self-titled debut. It may not get the recognition it actually deserves, but it is full of wonderful things, none more wonderful than the breaks where they sing bits from other well-known songs, like 'Buddy Holly' and 'Walk Like An Egyptian'. »
Edition #67 in our weekly round-up of content, morphed into the form of a playlist.»
Earlier this month Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, announced that there'd be a release of a remix album of the quite wonderful Swim. This was very much welcomed, given the quality of the original songs. It was welcomed even further when we found out who'd be doing the remixing, with acts like Gold Panda, Junior Boys and Fuck Buttons included on it. »
Good news, good news fans.»
Metronomy recently finished work on their forthcoming third full-length record. It'll be released in March 2011. Looking forward to it muchly, are you? They've also just announced a batch of UK tour dates where they'll play material from that album. It's not mega-long but long enough, I guess.»
Earlier today everyone's favourite Kiwi DJ Zane Lowe was going on about a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT of some kind about Foo Fighters on Twitter. Logic would assume that it wouldn't be that big an announcement, maybe something about a UK tour. Or similar. But Lowe is a man of his word, and his word is not hyperbole.»
New Mogwai.»
Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a new Tron film on the way. It actually looks quite good. Those very-French and very-good lot Daft Punk are involved in the soundtrack for the film and generally musically and all that etc. There's now an official video for a new track, called 'Derezzed', which you can have a peek at here.»
Iron & Wine, not content with signing to 4AD, not content with announce a new album for next January - Kiss Each Other Clean have even more good news for their fans, and moderate news for those who "quite like" what they do without going overboard.»
Free track, new show.»
New video, Jamie. »
Well, it's good news and it's confusing news.»
Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling are like the first couple of UK folk. Only they aren't, because that perhaps falls to Marling and Mr Mumford. Ho hum. Still, it's good to see Flynny and Marling working together, as they do on his new single, 'The Water'. Now that single has a video. I'm still trying to get my head round how Laura topped NME's Cool List for 2010. I mean, she's great but coolness? »
New Girls track, yeah.»
Having just (mostly) finished our focus on Nordic Music in our Nordic Series, this one has come a few days late. But fear not as we'll still be adding to it over the next little while, there's still a few things to come. Still, this new Lykke Li song has come as a lovely Monday morning perk-up. Of the best kind.»
You may, hopefully, have heard of if not actually heard Team Me if you've read our recent comprehensive look at the Oslo music scene with Ben Manwairing's Drowned in Oslo column. Their single 'Weathervanes and Chemicals' was mentioned, was mentioned. And a video of it was posted. »
The lead singer of The Slits Ari Up (aka Arianna Forster) died on Wednesday this week after a serious illness, believed to be cancer. She was 48.»
